CHAPTER FOURTEEN

After Leah went to bed that night, she saw a spot of light moving around on the ceiling. The light was coming from outside, and she was sure it was not an incidental event. Then, remembering that Ada told her that Caleb would announce his visits in such a way, Leah smiled. Getting out of bed, she walked over to the window and saw a familiar figure in the garden below.

“John!” she said in a loud whisper. “What are you doing?”

“Come down,” John called. He turned the flashlight off.

Quickly, Leah got dressed, wishing that she had more attractive clothes to wear than just a plain dress. She picked up her sturdy high-top shoes and had a moment to mourn the heels she had been wearing when she came to this place. She started to put the shoes on, then decided it would be quieter to carry them down the stairs. She walked out onto the front porch and sat on the swing to put them on.

“Here, let me help you,” John said. He lifted her leg, then slipped on the shoe, laced and tied it, then did the same thing with its mate.

Except for shoe salesmen, Leah had not had help putting on her shoes since she was a very little girl. And while the shoe salesmen did nothing for her, she felt a strong charge of sensual pleasure at John’s ministrations.

“Well, I can’t take you to a movie. But I can take you out for dinner.”

“Oh, I . ”

“I’m sorry. I know this is rather sudden, and with no prior notice.”

“It’s not that. I would love to go with you, John. But you ate at the same dinner table as I did tonight and you know how much food was there. I don’t think I could eat another bite.”

“What about, on a cool night like this, a piece of hot apple pie with melted cheese and a cup of coffee?”

Leah smiled. “I think I could handle that. Do you know where we might get such a thing?”

“Yoder’s Place in Arthur.”

“What is Yoder’s Place? And it’s after nine o’clock. Will it still be open?”

“It’s sort of a late-night hangout. People go there after movies and such. It’s open until midnight.”

“All right.”

John led her out to the barn, where Prodigal was already hitched up to his buggy.

“You seem to have been pretty sure of yourself,” Leah said. “You already have Prodigal hooked up. Hello, Prodigal.” Leah squeezed the horse’s ear as she had seen John do.

“It’s not so much that I was sure of myself as it is that I didn’t want to waste any time if you said yes.”

John helped Leah climb into the buggy, then he got in and tucked a blanket around them, which brought their bodies into close contact. He snapped the reins, and Prodigal started out. For a few
